The “Jewish premium”: attitudes towards Jewish and non-Jewish immigrants arriving in Israel under the Law of Return

This paper examines discriminatory attitudes of Israeli Jews towards non-Jewish immigrants admitted into Israel under the Law Return. We looked at three spheres discrimination: admission, political rights, and welfare rights focused on role realistic socioeconomic symbolic threats in emergence attitudes. used a mixed-methods approach that allowed to test our hypotheses among representative sample (survey) examine logics underlying respondents’ justifications for endorsing discrimination (focus groups/in-depth interviews). The findings show endorsement is strongest case admission where seek prevent presence outgroups deny them right become part society. By contrast, with respect less pronounced – possibly because it not viewed as awarding membership society, but rather providing individuals their basic needs based universalistic or democratic values.
